ChandlerMay Builds and Opens New Building to Support Shelter Reset and Production Growth
Published: 3/15/2007 | Author: Chandler/May

Huntsville, AL – March 15, 2007. ChandlerMay is a leading manufacturer of Mobile Shelter systems and in the production of complex build-to-print products.

The new building will support the One-System™ Ground Control Station Reset process and various manufacturing jobs that are expanding. This will be the third building in the CMI campus giving a total of 45,000 square ft. of integration, engineering, test lab and production space.

CMI has delivered over 125 of the Tactical UAV HMMWV-mounted Shelters to AAI in support of the Shadow UAV. OF those 44 have already been refurbished through the Reset Process and are back in the field. Eventually all of the full rate production shelters will go through the extensive Reset process which brings them back to original new condition with the latest technical enhancements.

The Reset process includes the removal of all equipment and a full cleaning which involves the removal of the fine sand and dust particles that invariably covers the equipment while the unit is in the field. The outside of the shelter is repainted. The cable trays are cleaned and the equipment is reinstalled with technology insertion occurring at this point. A complete acceptance test is performed with the customer witnessing and the unit is put back in tactical inventory.

ChandlerMay Inc.’s Integration division builds dozens of unique and complex products for its customers, including several Tactical Unmanned Aircraft Ground Control Shelter systems. The Shelters are currently operational in several military deployments. The Shelters are built in Huntsville at CMI’s new 25,000 square foot Engineering and Production building. CMI incorporates the latest technologies into these shelters using CMI’s unique integration and test processes for rugged systems. The Shelters utilize a wide range of CMI capabilities, including the latest in machine shop technology, cable fabrication and rugged systems packaging as well as the incorporation of high-end embedded VME Sun based workstations, video and communications products.

Chandler/May, Inc. has reduced the Shelter build time from 6 months to 4 weeks. The Ground Control Shelter Case Study gives complete integration and detailed product information on this project, including the benefits of the Shadow TUAV system in combat and the processes involved in building the shelter.
