Shelter Division to Deliver Over 150 Tactical Ground Control Shelters
Published: 2/25/2007 | Author: Chandler/May

Huntsville, AL – February 25, 2007. Chandler/May’s Shelter Division recently received a contract from AAI Corporation for additional Ground Control Stations for the Shadow Tactical Unmanned Air Vehicle (TUAV). This brings the total Ground Station to be delivered or already delivered to 150 total Shelters.

Chandler/May Inc.’s UAV Shelter division builds the Shadow Tactical Unmanned Aircraft Ground Control Shelter for AAI Corporation. The Shelter is currently operational in several military deployments. The Shelters are built and tested at two of CMI’s plants in Huntsville, AL. CMI incorporates the latest technologies into these shelters using CMI’s unique integration and test processes for rugged systems.

The Shelters utilize a wide range of CMI capabilities, including the latest in machine shop technology, cable fabrication and rugged systems packaging as well as the incorporation of high-end embedded VME Sun based workstations, video and communications products.

The Shadow Unmanned Air Vehicle system is designed to provide brigade commanders with accurate target acquisition, battle damage assessment and battle management capabilities. This system also saves lives by spotting ambushes and insurgents planting improvised explosive devices. The near real-time video imagery, day or night, fulfills its primary mission of reconnaissance and surveillance.

Shadow platoons are operational in IRAQ. The basic Shadow platoon consists of four air vehicles, six High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), two Ground Control Stations (GCS), four Remote Video Terminals (RVTs) and antennas, one Portable Ground Control Station and Data Terminal. One HMMWV of the platoon transports the air vehicles and launcher trailer. Two more HMMWVs each transport one mounted GCS. Two HMMWVs are personnel and equipment transports.

The Shadow 200 Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle system operated by the soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division provides brigade-level commanders with real-time intelligence of what is happening on the ground - day or night, while being virtually undetectable.

The secret is its ability to fly at extremely high altitudes while using advanced imaging systems capable of seeing from great distances.

Although not among the military UAVs used to fire on enemy targets, Shadows have seen action monitoring suspicious marks such as smoke columns, tanks or vehicles believed to hold bombs or weapons. They helped troops assess battle damage and track enemy vehicles to their home base, beaming video footage and logistical coordinates to system computers and ground crews.
