Aircraft Glass Inspection System

Chandler/May designed and built a unique one-of a-kind system for PPG to inspect the glass composite windows for defects and blemishes that they build for the Aircraft industry. PPG builds most of the world’s OEM windows, including those for the military, commercial and general aviation industries. The windows are installed on advance military aircraft, including the F14, V-22, the A10 WartHog and the Sikorsy Blackhawk and Seahawk helicopters.

The automated system inspects aircraft windshields for distortion. The specifications for aircraft glass must be much more stringent than that for auto glass, especially in the area in the pilot’s main field of view. The human eye use to be used and still is used to detect distortion. However, it cannot be relied upon to look at every point on the glass, thus a high-end automated video inspection system was required to meet the stringent high-quality glass required for military and commercial aircraft.

The System Consists of:

2-Axis stepper motor motion control
High-Resolution photographic printer
1024x1024 Camera mounted on a precision positioning system
An inspection background consisting of a grid of white squares on a black background
A PC which controls camera position, digital image processing, evaluation, and data storage
PCI based Frame grabber
Imaging Library
Storage Management software

How it works:

Takes a series of photos of the glass in front of the inspection background with the camera repositioned a small amount (fraction of an inch) between shots. The camera is focused on the inspection grid.
Proprietary method designed by Chandler/May combines the photos, improving the resolution, and then uses digital image processing techniques to produce an image free of extraneous information and features.
Further processing calculates the slope or deviation of the grid at all points in the inspected area as it is perceived through the glass. Slope or deviation must be below a predetermined limit for glass to pass inspection.
System allows images to be archived for long term storage and printed immediately if necessary. Any areas which are out of spec are highlighted on the printed photo.
Window inspection software was ported from Solaris to Windows by Chandler/May.
